Taika Waititi has successfully used a micro-funding site to raise the money needed to release his hit film in North America. But why isn't it on iTunes?

Boy beats Clash of the Titans

Taika Waititi’s coming-of-age comedy Boy is on track to become one of the highest grossing New Zealand films of all time.

Last week, it just edged out American holiday blockbuster Clash of the Titans to take in $1.24 million.

Boy's total box office take, after just two weeks, is now $2.13 million, out-pacing such local commercial hits as Whale Rider, Once Were Warriors and The World's Fastest Indian at the 14-day mark.

Notably, attendance increased during its second week of release, indicating good word of mouth.

Boy outraces the World’s Fastest Indian

Boy is on track to become one of the most successful movies to screen in local cinemas after a strong opening week but the industry is aiming for more than just the odd big film.

The film – written and directed by Taika Waititi – clocked up $866,121 in its first week in New Zealand, a stronger initial performance than Sione’s Wedding, Whale Rider and The World’s Fastest Indian.

Its opening day gross of $109,370 also put it ahead of those earlier films.

'Boy' shows Waititi is all grown up

Boy might be a silly 11-year-old who thinks he knows everything, but that doesn¹t mean his story can’t have genuine emotional depth and some good jokes.

Taika Waititi’s film - his second full-length feature after Eagle vs Shark – is set somewhere in the eighties, far out in the back end of nowhere.
