Buy Kiwi Made

Consumers give thumbs down to Buy Kiwi Made campaign

Made in NZ does not mean assembled in NZ

Another office furniture company has been fined following a Commerce Commission case alleging the company falsely claimed two of its chairs were made in New Zealand.

Auckland-based Eden Office Seating pleaded guilty to three charges in the Auckland District Court and received a $5,000 fine and ordered to pay $2,500 court costs over claims in its advertising brochures.

Two other office chair manufacturers, Lower Hutt based Dawell Furniture Co and Auckland based Damba Furniture, were also fined the same amount last November for making ‘New Zealand made’ claims.

Buy Kiwi Made a waste of taxpayer money – study

The axed Buy Kiwi Made campaign had little effect on consumer behaviour, a new study has found.

The $11.5 million campaign, a pet project of the Green Party and the result of the Greens/Labour coalition agreement after the 2005 election, has been canned by National until its effectiveness can be reviewed.

Now a study by the University of Otago has concluded that while the public likes the idea of country of origin campaigns, they won’t open their wallets to support the concept.
