Retailers across the country are likely to be experiencing delays processing eftpos transactions in the wake of the earthquake that shook Christchurch this afternoon.

$2.6m credit card fee settlement will shake up retail transactions

The Commerce Commission has settled out of court with Visa in a deal that will change the fees charged on all retail transactions in New Zealand.

Visa has settled – unlike MasterCard, The Warehouse Financial Services in relation to MasterCard, ANZ National Bank, Bank of New Zealand, Westpac, ASB Bank, Kiwibank and TSB Bank – which are due to face the commission in an October High Court case over interchange fees.

Debt-wary consumers paying with money in the bank

The recession seems has put the fear of debt into many consumers; the latest figures from Paymark show debit card use has increased while credit card use remained flat.

Debit card use was up 7.8% in May compared to last year, while credit card use only rose 0.4%.

Paymark chief executive Simon Tong says the trend towards people spending money they already have in the bank is a positive one and preferable to racking up credit card debt during the tough times.
