NZ to give $600,000 to Indonesia after quake

New Zealand is giving $600,000 to help quake-struck Indonesia and a further $400,000 to assist Southeast Asian countries hit by a typhoon.

Foreign Minister Murray McCully announced the $1 million package today saying it was initial support.

The money would go to rescue efforts and emergency provisions after the September 30 quake in western Sumatra in Indonesia.

Typhoon Ketsana struck the Philippines, Vietnam and Cambodia, and funding would help address the devastation caused by flooding in those countries, Mr McCully said.

Asian market of 575m people opened up to NZ

The New Zealand-China free trade agreement, which garnered so much media hype for months on end, has been quietly exceeded in scope and quality by a newly-minted deal between New Zealand, Australia and Asean, which pulls back the curtain on a market of 575 million people.

The timing of the signing of the deal (last Friday night New Zealand time in Thailand) is exquisite because it will apply positive pressure to Asian economic giants such as Korea, India and Japan to join the party.

Suspension on beef imports to Indonesia lifted

A suspension of New Zealand meat imports into Indonesia has been lifted following a meeting between Trade Minister Phil Goff and trade officials today.

Agricultural officials in Indonesia last Monday temporarily banned beef imports from New Zealand, a $100 million trade, due to halal certification issues.

Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation, required imported beef products to be certified as meeting Islamic halal standards.
