TelstraClear set to re-ignite local loop unbundling

Just as it seemed the unbundling insurgency had stalled, TelstraClear has announced its entry into the market, moving its gear into 21 Telecom exchanges.

Today the telco said it had moved its own DSL2+ and VDSL2 gear into 21 of Telecom’s exchanges, moving toward a target of 70.

TestraClear says it has begun customer trials, but will not say where the exchanges are, or when the service will go live - other than that it will be before the end of the year.

Wellington unbundled

Local loop unbundling has finally made it south of the Bombay Hills.

Wellington-based Actrix has become the first ISP outside of Auckland to move its own DSL gear into a Telecom exchange.
Actrix Chief Executive George Reedy says his company has installed an NEC cabinet in Telecom’s Courtney Place exchange. The unbundled service will be available to the approximately 1100 Actrix customers located in the immediate vicinity of the exchange, says Reedy.

Plans based on the new unbundled service will be offered to central Wellington customers from mid October.
