The World Superyacht Awards, to be held in May in London, will feature four Kiwi-built superyachts.

The finalists include boats built by Alloy Yachts, Yachting Developments (Auckland), Fitzroy Yachts (New Plymouth) and Southern Ocean Marine (Tauranga).

Another yacht refitted by Westhaven-based Orams Marine Services is one of six finalists in the refit category.

The marine industry is hoping for its biggest event since the America’s Cup next year, with the culmination of the Louis Vuitton Trophy Series and the Auckland International Boat Show.

Marine Industry Association executive director Peter Busfield said Louis Vuitton racing yachts, crews, support boats, patrol boats and visiting super yachts in the Viaduct Harbour would add a whole new dimension to the boat show.

Ten countries are expected to compete in the regatta and the first round robin runs for the duration of the show, from March 11 to 14.
