Williams to get reprimand but likely to keep job

Labour Party president Mike Williams has been reprimanded for telling different stories of what he said about the Electoral Finance Act, Prime Minister Helen Clark said today.

However, she expected him to keep his job.

Mr Williams yesterday said he had not made the remark that it was a "damn good idea" for Labour Party canvassers to hand out government pamphlets.

But TV One produced a recording of him making that very response during the Labour Party conference in Wellington earlier this month.

Recording contradicts Labour president's pamphlet denial

Labour Party president Mike Williams has denied saying it was a "damn good idea" for Labour Party canvassers to hand out government pamphlets.

But that was before TV One produced a recording of him making that very response.

At the recent Labour Party congress a delegate, during a session Mr Williams was running, suggested using government department material such as on Working for Families and Kiwisaver to help promote the Labour Party.

Mr Williams' response was that it was a "damn good idea".

Clark: Labour president showed "poor judgement"

Labour Party president Mike Williams had shown "poor judgment" in agreeing Labour Party canvassers could hand out government leaflets, Prime Minister Helen Clark said today.

"This was a not-so-bright idea which came off the floor at a workshop, I understand, and the not-so-bright idea has been thrown off the ninth floor of the Beehive," Miss Clark said today.
