Ban on US/NZ training and Skyhawks sale likely to go

The United States is considering a reversal of a ban on military training with New Zealand, put in place because of our anti-nuclear stance.

The ban was absurd and the US was looking to review it, assistant secretary of state for East Asia and Pacific Affairs Kurt Campbell told TV One last night.

The Presidential ban on military training with New Zealand was likely to remain in place but would be loosened.

Defence personnel to get 10 pc pay rise

Defence Force personnel will get a 10 percent pay rise this year, Defence Minister Phil Goff said today.

Speaking on the Agenda programme, Mr Goff said that understaffing in the military meant personnel numbers had to rise, but this would be difficult when unemployment was at historical lows and there was great demand for skilled workers.

"We've got a remuneration review that we've now published to members of the Defence Force," Mr Goff said.
