Labour’s Waterview tunnel would add 34c to petrol prices

Infrastructure Minister Steven Joyce has had a go at Labour for its alleged shortcoming in the business case to build Auckland’s Waterview tunnel motorway extension, accusing the former government of not providing any funding details.

Other than incurring more Crown debt, operating under tolls or a 35-year property tax, the only other option would be for a 20c per litre fuel tax.

Helen Clark's UN post confirmed unanimously

Former prime minister Helen Clark has taken her political skills to the world stage, confirmed unanimously this morning by the UN general assembly as the new head of the United Nations' Development Programme.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon nominated Miss Clark to the job last week, and with his recommendation her nomination was unanimously approved by the UN General Assembly this morning.

Miss Clark, Labour prime minister from 1999-2008, joins the UN program on April 20.
