Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism John Key yesterday unveiled the plans for Queens Wharf for next year's Rugby World Cup celebrations.

The plans centre around a $9.8 million "multi-purpose, temporary facility" named The Cloud (pictured above).

The redeveloped Queens Wharf will also feature landscaped open areas. Shed 10 will be refurbished and remain onsite.

The historic (if crumbling) Shed 11 be "disassembled".

Queens Wharf is party central

It’s official - Queens Wharf will be party central in time for the Rugby World Cup.

This morning Rugby World Cup Minister Murray McCully announced an agreement between the government and Auckland Regional Council means the area will be redeveloped in time for next year’s event.

Ports of Auckland gets $40m for Queens Wharf

The government and Auckland Regional Council are going halves in the $40 million purchase of Queens Wharf from Ports of Auckland.

The deal, announced this afternoon, will see the port vacate the wharf by April 1 next year.

It will be developed as a public venue for the 2011 Rugby World Cup, and will also house an international standard cruise ship terminal, which Ports of Auckland will operate.
