The Mayor of the new Auckland super city will be paid a salary of $240,000 a year.

And if the job goes to Auckland City Mayor John Banks, he’s in for a pay rise of almost $80,000.

Mr Banks is the country’s highest paid mayor, with an annual salary of $160, 567.

The Remuneration Authority today released details of the pay packets for those elected to the new Auckland Council.

Auckland’s new supercity will have the power to hire and fire directors of the new council-controlled organisations (CCO’s) from the first day it takes power.

Auckland Council will also have the right to discard the council controlled organisations, though possibly not the transport CCO.

Changes to Auckland Council’s control over the seven CCOs that will spearhead delivery of core services across the city were revealed this afternoon with the reporting back of the Local Government (Auckland Law Reform) Bill by the Auckland governance legislation committee.

It will be divided in to 13 different wards, with 21 local boards.

CENTRAL AUCKLAND

Orakei on its own
Orakei residents bombarded authorities with submissions, the most received from any area in fact. As they asked for, Remuera residents will be segregated in the supercity boundaries from the poorer area of Otahuhu.

Eastern suburbs become Te Irirangi
The Te Irirangi ward includes Paluranga Heights, Bucklands Beach, Half Moon Bay, Cockle Bay, Botany Downs, Highland Park and East Tamaki Heights.

The local board represents three distinct subdivisions, at Pakuranga, Howick and Botany.

Manukau Ward
The Manukau ward includes Auckland airport, Mangere, Middlemore and part of East Tamaki, with one local board for Mangere-Otahuhu and another for the Otara and Papatoetoe areas.

The commission said this meant the southern boundary moved to include Manukau CBD and the area bound by new State Highway 20, the western boundary moved westward to include Papaptoetoe cemetery and the Manukau memorial gardens, South Auckland Crematorium and the Puhinui Reserve. The eastern boundary was adjusted to include Flatbush.
