First taste of turbocharged 3G

Read also: Telecom promises HSPA+ by month's end

I’m currently at Vodafone’s Auckland office on the Viaduct, test HSPA+ with Scott Bartley from PC World and everyman Juha Saarinen.

There have been some time-out issues with the HSPA+ site we’re connecting to, and often I’ve clocked around 2Mbit/s using Speedtest.net.

But I’ve also registered a couple of scorchers, including this 11.59Mbit/s effort:

Juha has hit 12.91Mbit/s (see his Techsploder post here). Scott’s been clocking mid 5s.

Vodafone maintain speedtest.net doesn’t show HSPA+ in full effect, because its 1MB test file gets sucked down before the network hits its full stride. Downloading a series of big Linux distros, a Vodafone techie hit 20Mbit/s - very close to HSPA+'s theoretical maximum.

To put that in contrast, the fastest speed I've ever clocked using a data card is around 3.5Mbit/s on XT. On the plain vanilla HSPA versions of either carrier's network, it's not often you top 2 to 2.5Mbit/s.

The site is currently being reset, so more soon tests soon, and I’ll add some ftp tests in the p.m.

What speed can you expect?
Telecom - which is also demoing HSPA+ this morning, in Wellington - is setting the bar at a modest 4Mbit/s for HSPA+ downloads. As ever, real-world speed depends on factors like how many others are connected at the same time, and the quality of your connection to the nearest cell site, among other factors.

Vodafone reckons its real-world HSPA+ speeds will be closer to 10Mbit/s (in Australia, Telstra tells customers to expect 7-8Mbit/s on its recent HSPA+ upgrade.

Coverage today
Around 100 customers are trialing Vodafone's HSPA+ upgrade around Auckland in a test area that extends from the CBD southwards to Balmoral, east as far as Mt Hobson and west as far as Grey Lynn.

All sites in the test quadrant have fibre backhaul.

The carrier has yet to announce any pricing for its HSPA+ data stick (which looks like the existing Vodem but a little chunkier) or plans, or a roll-out timetable (other than that it will be available during 2010).

Telecom has pledged to roll-out hits HSPA+ enhanced version of XT before Christmas. Its first compatible device, the TT stick, costs $149 on a two-year, $69.95 a month data plan that includes 8GB of data.

Vodafone says it is waiting to guage results from its trial group before setting pricing and data caps.

Telecom says compatible handsets are six to 12 months away; Vodafone says it could be longer. Both telcos have to wait for handset manufacturers to catch up with HSPA+.

The HSPA+ version of the V Stick, or Vodem, is a little chunkier than its HSPA predecessor, but still thumb size. Like other sticks, it takes its own sim card, and has a slot for a MicroSD card.

A geeky-cool design touch sees a purple light on top of the new V-Stick change to light blue when you get an HSPA+ connection.

100 people using the

100 people using the network? so in reality the speeds you quote are not really repsentative of the final products reality at all

me and most of the people I know would be happy just to get 3G reception in central auckland with Vodafone. Being stuck on a flakey 2G connection really blows

Possible interference

I hope that this test has nothing to do with the fact that I can not make or recieve calls using my non-3G vodafone mobile in any of the trial areas.

Are you kidding

Its HSPA+ works in the same band its 3G 64 QAM how can you get Possible interference..............some people are sooooooooooo stupid

so Vodafone have a "test

so Vodafone have a "test quadrant" spanning a few kilometres yet Telecom is going national. Hmm why is this story even news?

Vodafone will of course be

Vodafone will of course be launching HSPA+ to many sites around the country starting this year & going through next year.

Despite what another article says on this site - I doubt very much that Telecom will have HSPA+ "across their entire Network"!

Foot note to previous post,

Foot note to previous post, should read:

"I doubt very much that Telecom will have HSPA+ "across their entire Network, by the end of this month"!

Telcom is scrambling

to try to save face on this one. They're being punished by Two Degrees in the prepay sector, and had to hurry out a $12/Text bundle, and they're being screwed by Vodafone in the wholesale space, so suddenly they're desperate to be a wholesale player.

All that adds up to desperation on Hereford Street.

And now this - "Vodafone's cheating weedle weedle. We'll have it too, weedle, weedle".

Stop talking about it and just show us already. Telecom's very good at talking about stuff - how about you launch it already.

Telecom can go nationwide:

Telecom can go nationwide: Vodafone cant.

Telecom have the backhull (fiber): Vodafone don't (Microwave)

fibre + micowave

Hey Steve, why can't Vodafone go nationwide? ever heard of all-IP microwave? grab some 256 QAM all-IP microwave links and then you're cooking.

Fibre is the slowest way to reach sites on hilltops, and don't tell me Telecom already have fibre to their far flung sites. Those hilltop sites are the ones that will complete the nationwide picture and all-IP microwave is the way to go.

Backhull should never be used.

3G

Speed isn't everything -- Vodaphone can't deliver 3G at any speed where I live...

@ PG - 09:56

Where do you live? What device / handset do you use?

Vodafone provide 3G to 97% of where NZer's Live, work, play (no this is not land coverage - it's population based, same as Telecom).

Purchase a phone that supports both 2100 & 900Mhz UMTS & you may well get 3G Services / Speed with Vodafone, a lot of Nokia handsets do.

Check the coverage maps here:

http://www.vodafone.co.nz/coverage/

@ Steve

Vodafone partner with MANY suppliers to provide Fibre backhaul to their cell sites (Vector in Auckland for instance) & many, many more sites are coming online next year with Fibre backhaul.

Please don't make statements that are grossly incorrect.

Voda 3g

I have an Iphone and Vodafone advertises 3g coverage for my area, when I question it they said to get 3g in Tirau I have to get vodem stick...Vodafone is a joke cheers Peter

Tirau

Vodafone has extended 3G (900MHz) coverage in Tirau. Any handset that supports 900MHz 3G will do 3g in Tirau.
Nokias, HTC Magic, Blackberrys etc all do extended 3G. iPhone doesn't .

Voda 3g

Just to anser your previous post..I was sold an Iphone with the Sales Person in Hamilton saying that 3G coverage is available in Tirau after checking the coverage map. A week later when I wanted to return the phone and getting off the contract they refused to take it back. Now I use an XT stick here in Tirau out of sheer frustration how I was dealt with by Vodafone.
