iPhone on XT stumbles with tethering
Keallhauled has found that a Telecom XT Sim card will run fine in an iPhone bought from Vodafone, with just a simple DIY setting change.
However, the release of iPhone OS 3.0 has muddied the appeal of network hopping using Apple’s handset. With this operating system software upgrade, free via the iTunes AppStore, you gain the ability to tether, or use your iPhone as a modem.
Some people using the iPhone with an XT Sim card have been able to tether - as relayed in this Geekzone forum discussion pointed out by IT consultant and commentator Colin Jackson.
However, it does seem that unlike voice and data on the iPhone, tethering is something that has to be activated via carrier setting that you download from iTunes.
Telecom is not an official Apple carrier (yet) so has no settings for download on iTunes.
On Geekzone, you’ll see some clever types have created their own “carrier pack”. Download it, and apparently you can tether.
“Several people have told me that this works,” Mr Jackson emailed Keallhauled.
“However, the Telecom patch comes from a third party website, comes with a complex install procedure (downgrading iTunes first), and warns that it may break roaming and other undesirable behaviour. That, and not wanting to break my iPhone from running on Vodafone, is why I haven't tried it,” Mr Jackson wrote.
“This undoubtedly works, as various people have told me. But it's rather dubious status means that I think you'd be brave to rely on it, or to do it to your primary phone.”
Telecom - which had been eager to facilitate a demonstration of a Vodafone iPhone running on an XT Sim for regular use - had not comment on tethering.

I have an iphone running the 3.0 firmware and after downloading the telecom profile from geekzone it worked like a charm as a tethered modem... perhaps you'd like to try this out and then re-write this story
The story acknowledges that the third party fix has worked for a number of GeekZone members. Good on you and good luck to you. Colin's point was that even as a tech-savvy person, he doesn't want to mess around with his phone to that degree.
So let me get this straight, you're complaining that a Telco isn't supporting an unsupported phone. Yet there's a working community fix and that's not good enough? WTF?
Lots of people want to use an iPhone on XT because XT offers nationwide 3G support on its 850MHz band, while Vodafone only offers 3G support in urban areas (where its iPhone-friendly 2100MHz band supplements its nationwide 900MHz 3G network).
The iPhone, and the coming iPhone 3G S both work on 850MHz and 2100MHz.
A community fix is helpful for people who're tech-savvy. A lot of business people and consumers would like a simpler solution or, better, for Apple to appoint Telecom as a second New Zealand carrier.
Your link to the Geekzone post is broken.
FYI - this method does work, is easy to install (no need to downgrade iTunes first, just read the Geekzone thread)and has no other 'undesirable behaviour'.
The ONLY thing it *may* do is affect roaming, which unfortunately we cannot test until someone goes to the UK. However it is not a permanent thing, a quick restore will have your iPhone back the way it was when you bought it.
Hi chris. What's the word on this as far as you know. ?
Remind me not to read anymore of your failed write ups...
As I said in the article, the third party fix on Geekzone has worked for Geekzone members who've tried it. Colin Jackson, a tech-savvy user, did not want to hack his settings to that degree. A lot of mainstream punters will think along similar lines. Nothing more, nothing less.
Some silly responses to your post, Chris. Good info in there. I guess it will only be a matter of time before Telecom sorts the agreement out with Apple and official support is in place.
I've tethered my iPhone up to work with Vodafone - and am really impressed how simply it works - and nice speeds over 3G. Amazing that Apple took so long to enable this. I guess we have AT&T to blame for that though,
Some retarded comments on this post dude - love it how they are anonymous!
Hopefully Telecom will sort this deal out soon - but obviously Apple is far more loyal to a large multinational than one small NZ Telco so who knows what kind of deals they have... jerks!
