Rhys Darby to front for Two Degrees

Ignoring Keallhauled advice to employ James May, Two Degrees is going with comedian Rhys Darby as its pitch man.

As with most things related to its launch (timing, plans, pricing) Two Degrees has no comment, but NBR spied spotted a commercial being filmed on Auckland's Takapuna beach, with the Darby fronting.

The actor is best-known as the hapless manager Murray in Flight of the Conchords but has also recent starred in Yes Man alongside Jim Carrey, and from July 6 will front C4's 100 New Zealand Pop Culture Stories.

Keallhauled says: good call.

And bring it on. We're getting sick of the sight of The Hamster.

Rumour of the day: TelstraClear, which resells Telecom's CDMA network but has been blocked from XT, is trying to buy Two Degrees.

Utterly without foundation, but it has a certain logic to it. At last week's TelCon10 conference, TelstraClear chief executive Allan Freeth said his company would be a player in the 3G market, but wouldn't say how. Make it so.

It's not fair, I've been doing my best. It's all about speed, speeeeeeeed man.

Whybins: A one idea agency.

A spokesman for a brand: Just like ASB Bank.

Oh dear, what an old idea.

Yes, sonds like a very similar approach to ASB already. Maybe the ad will start like this.
Rhys is in New York. He gets a call on his phone.
"Darby, head to New Zealand and find out all you can about Two Degrees"
Rhys then utters a few discarded Goldstein jokes, before heading to NZ.
Once there he romps around Auckland looking for kids with pre-pay phones. Unfortunately, their moms hold thepurse strings.
A few more Goldstein jokes later, and we finish.
Then TBWA gets a call from the head of ASB.

Yes - perhaps a good call for 2 degrees with a front man such as Rhys.

However, I doubt it will do any good for Rhys' profile in NZ. After the XT ads, the mute button is readily used every time Hammond speaks on Top Gear (formerly a favourite show)

Fantastico ! - Rhys always came across as 'cheap as' when in Flight....so 2 deg is also aiming for cheap, for customers - brilliant note to hit during a recession.

The tech wasn't cheap, but once you've got customers getting good service for less money, everything's sweet. Plus of course, the ad campaign's going to be more varied with more tapes, as Rhys is - well - cheaper than the Hamster, for a start, and also a lot more available. Should be fun.....

Free to a new home. I hear.

Glad its not Tex
