Paul Henry and the R-word

Having both written a book touching on the subject of mental retardation and been interviewed by Paul Henry on national television about the same work, we feel suitably qualified to weigh in on the latest row involving the popular breakfast host.

Henry has reportedly landed in hot water after describing the Scottish singing sensation Susan Boyle "retarded," and claims he is the victim of an orchestrated campaign by the IHC, the Sunday Star-Times reveals:

On Breakfast on Monday when reading a piece from a women's magazine about the runner-up in the show Britain's Got Talent, Henry laughed as he described how Boyle was "starved of oxygen at birth" and suffered an intellectual disability.

"If you look at her carefully, you can make it out," he told viewers. "Here's the really interesting revelation: she is in fact retarded. And if you look at it carefully, you can make it out, can't you?"

The paper reports that the IHC has taken offence at his use of the word "retarded," which it says is in "extremely bad taste,” and the organisation has been encouraging folk to complain to TVNZ and the Human Rights Commission.

If the matter has been fairly reported (a big if, given the story’s own headline misquotes Henry) this all seems to be a tempest in a media teacup.

Mental retardation — a generalised disorder, characterised by subaverage cognitive functioning and deficits in two or more adaptive behaviours —is no laughing matter. But much of the terminology to do with it has long since passed into common usage: idiot, feeble-minded, moronic, and so forth.

The actual use of the word retarded is no more shocking than, say, handicapped, which of course is what the “H” in the IHC acronym stands for.

Overseas, the subject of Boyle possible cognitive impairment has already been a matter of considerable speculation, which has generally passed without media outlets making a meal out of anybody’s choice of language.

Speaking of which, our own experience on the other side of the microphone with Paul Henry discussing neurological disorders left us with the impression of a considerate and sensitive interviewer. He'd probably do a great interview with Susan Boyle, too.

Henry's persistent abuse of his position demonstrates his utter arrogance, the sooner TVNZ fire this sunshine artist the better. [ a sunshine artist is someone who thinks the sun shines out of his rectal orifice, which is exactly what this sneering, callous, self-important egoist clearly believes ]

Wow such an accurate description of Paul Henry! Awesome!

Just love ii!

was'nt the said lady recently spotted dancing in an airport singing to a MOP ??---

Maybe Mr henry was on the money

The only retard in this affair is the company which still employs him

Quite clear Paul Henry is factually correct inhis use of teh R word...so why have the IHC got so up in arms ? Their behaviour against Paul Henry is appalling. Why is calling a spade a spade now deemed to be offensive ?

i don't know why people get so upset and PC about what PH says on bkfst teev.
all you're doing is helping prove the old adage" all publicity is good publicity" and that's oxygen for media types!
we need to evaporate our PC world...the cuzzies ( oops sorry for the offence ) have got Hone and we've got Paul Henry...it's all good.

I agree with part of what you say.I will agree if Paul Henry's comment's were fact and true.As for Hone his email is fact and true.

At least Sunrise on 3 is fun and highly informative to watch and it does not have Henry's egotistical self promoting ranting.

Paul Henry is a breath of fresh air in our otherwise uptight and overly PC world. Long may his entertaining ramblings continue!

If anyone is a retard it's that Henry.

Would TVNZ get the idiot of TV he is a complete plonker and a shock jock and plain offensive.

Yep the retards are those TVNZ execs who perpetuate the employment of this lemon.

Paul, you're not funny, not smart, not entertaining....... you're plainly awful.

I never much liked Paul Henry, but after seeing some of the stupidly critical comments here I'm having second thoughts.

I called the Human Rights Commission on Mr Harawira's language and was told that he had committed no crime and freedom of speech allowed such things to be said. Of course the HRC would not allow Mr Holme's "cheeky darky" comment to be passed under 'freedom of speech', so given the HRC silence so far on Mr Henry's outburst, we can accept it as part of freedom of speech - can't we ? As for being offended, well, it is still a free country, the IHC is allowed to be offended, no crime there.
By the way, Mr Henry is a goldmine for TVNZ, the show attracts a lot of viewers so it is profitable for TVNZ to have him there - great eh !

While I can accept that calling her retarded was light hearted way of mocking something she did or said, I think that his comment, "If you look at her carefully, you can make it out," was just malicious. He seems to be snickering about the possibility that she may have mental retardation, especially when you consider he was laughing at the start of his comments. He doesn't seem to be genuinely comtemplating the possiblity that she may be mentally retarded. I'm am unsure whether he is ridiculing her physical looks but as she is very plain, it seems likely. He may be a considerate interviewer but in this case his attempt to be humourous about a condition that she may have has gone pear-shaped and I am not surprised by the media's reaction to his comments.

I have barely seen Paul in action on the telly, but always quietly guffaw to myself over his comments when they are published. NZers seem so afraid of anyone with anything provocative to say. Our desperate need for conformity dovetails nicely with the PC brigade who also brook no dissent - hence why Paul Henry will be demonised by the HRC and the like.

As someone who lives with, loves, works alongside and is a friend and comrade of people with intellectual impairments I feel able to comment on this topic. Paul, through his ignorance has opened up a much needed discussion in this country; around inclusion and diversity. All people have an equal value and have rights that cannot be ignored because they are 'not your problem'.

People need to open their self interested worlds up to different ways of experiencing life. This isn't about being PC it's about being fully human.

As you are aware David, the bullying, physical and sexual abuse that the majority of people with impairments face in their lifetime are criminal matters rather than laughing matters.

I heard that Paul Henry actually has disleckseeya - maybe thats his problem and hes lashing out at others to make himself feel better?

Whe I see Henry on the good morning I see an insecure short man... who makes a stupid comment then looks around at everyone with a stupid smile on his face as if to say.."arent I clever". He is a dick... a total dick...take him off TV as soon as possible...

When I was ooh about 7 years old I used to make fun of "retards", moustachioed and bearded ladies, smelly kids, kids with "germs" and nits, or who wet their pants, fat people, "curry-munchers," "Ching Chong Chinamen" "coconuts" and many others like that, I am mildly ashamed to say. But I don't do this as a grown-up. I certainly don't get paid a lot of money to do and say these sort of things on TV.

I can honestly say I don't watch Paul Henry in the mornings, and I suggest more people follow my example. He gets paid heaps, presumably, because the ratings are high. Vote with your remotes people!!!
