The strange timeline of the Neelam Choudary allegations

Aspiring Labour parliamentary candidate Neelam Choudary was revealed this week to be the complainant (or as John Key labels it, the alligator) regarding unwanted attention from former National Minister Richard Worth.

This is a separate complaint to the one from a Korean businesswoman which is under Police investigation and led to Worth being removed as a Minister.

What was originally a straightforward story has become very murky when you look at the timeline, as we now know it.

8 Nov 2008 – Labour defeated at General Election. Worth and Choudary meet at some stage during the campaign. Another National MP has told me they met Choudary during or after the election campaign and that she went out of her way to ask for a photo with the MP, and that other National MPs had had the same experience with Choudary. Unusual as Choudary had tried to be the Labour candidate for Botany.

11 Nov 2008 – Phil Goff elected Leader of the Labour Party

26 Nov 2008 – Richard Worth asks to meet Choudary for a coffee. Choudary asks Phil Goff whether she should meet Worth, and he advises her to do so if she takes someone else along. Her husband sits in their vehicle while she has coffee. Worth allegedly offers her a job.

Choudary has said previously that she went to Goff to get the text messages and phone calls to stop, but in fact she contacted Phil Goff the day she was first contacted by Worth. She has also said she did that because Worth was offering her a job – but he made the job offer allegedly at the coffee meeting, so we still don’t know why Choudary sough advice from no less than the party leader on whether or not to have coffee with Richard Worth.

12 Dec 2008 – Choudary’s husband convicted for immigration fraud over taking of money for fake jobs.

23 Feb 2009 – Between 26 November and 23 February Worth is alleged to have sent 40 text messages and made 60 phone calls to Choudary. We are left guessing why an aspiring Labour Party MP was not able to tell the National Party Minister to leave them alone. Also we have no idea why the texts and phone calls seemingly stopped on that date.

27 Mar 2009 – A well known business woman says they saw Worth and Choudary having coffee together at the Circus Circus café on this day – a month after the alleged harassment had stopped.

6 May 2009 – Phil Goff calls John Key to ask him to take action over the alleged harassment. We still do not know why no approach was made until almost three months after the last text or phone call.

3 Jun 2009 – Worth resigns as a Minister due to alleged behaviour involving a Korean woman.

Later that day media ask Key if he has received any other complaints against Worth. Newstalk ZB’s Barry Soper has written that this question was obviously planted in the gallery by Phil Goff’s office as no one but Goff or Key knew.

Even later in the day the gallery report rumours that Goff passed on the complaint – information that again logically could only have come from Goff’s office

4 Jun 2009 – a statement by the woman made public. We learn later that in fact the statement was written by Goff’s office based on a phone call with Choudary.

5 Jun 2009 – Choudary refuses to meet John Key unless she can bring Phil Goff along

10 Jun 2009 – Choudary publicly identified as complainant, after Goff describes her as strikingly beautiful and the NZ Herald’s Brian Rudman states she sought a Labour nomination in 2008

11 Jun 2009 – media carry stories of Choudary’s identity including her husband’s fraud conviction, and a victim’s story of his losses and her role in what happened.

Later that day TV 3 News reveals that the fraud victim, Siddesh Sajjan, was approached during the day by supporters of Choudary offering him the $15,000 he lost if he stopped talking to the media.

Mr Sajjan, a Labour Party supporter and voter wants to meet Phil Goff to talk to him about his dealings with the Choudary.

The week started with pressure on John Key to meet with Mrs Choudary, and in a twist of fate has ended with pressure on Phil Goff to meet with Mr Sajjan whose allegations about Choudary’s husband have actually been upheld in a court of law.

Will Phil Goff, who campaigns for victims of crime, meet the crime victim?

Just another scheme from Labours dirty tricks brigade, seems to have backfired on the instigators,Worth being the entree AND OUR PRIME MINISTER JOHN KEY the main course, what a web we weave when we set out to deceive,OUCH LABOUR,hung by your own petard.

Goof and Labour are trying to “create” and sensationalise a “Government sex/sleaze scandal” that only exists in their puny imaginations – attempting to create some kind of media beat-up to try and make the government look something similar to what’s happened in the UK recently. How utterly pathetic – and completely “Labour” with its gutter politics.

Next – they’ll be pathetically trying to blame PM Key for the World Wide Recession because it all started with Merrill Lynch don’t ya know and everyone knows Key worked there once.

Ironically, Labour not only scores an own goal and shoots themselves in the foot, they really help make National seem especially outstanding since Comrade Clark left after long overstaying her welcome, because of Goof and Little are now at the helm of Labour – long may they stay then I say. That’s the best thing that could happen to NZ politics – and NZ inc as a result.

I trust that the TV One Political Reporter who said early on that Phil Goff is the only one that came out looking good in this mess will be as adament about how bad he looks now!

What pillocks the Labour party have become, this all smacks of a deliberate set up and not very well done either.
Labour are diverting attention from the mess they left the country in

The fact that Choudary’s husband is convicted for immigration fraud over taking of money for fake jobs will surely tarnish the whole situation.

This one sounds good "GOFF GOOFS" (he! hee!!). NZ politicians were considered above board. Now they have stooped to the level of playing gutter politics (Worse than some of the third world countirs)

As for Nellam Choudry's business (??) as a immigration consultant do you know the benefit of a photogra[h of her with ministers and prime ministers would do for the image of the business. Only thing you got to do in India is hang these photos in the office. You are an agent with connections. Labour Grassroots - Watch her page. for some photos.

Hang in there Phil - the country needs you. NZers need you to continue making a complete prick of youself and discredit further the motley crew that have stuffed us up over the last 9 yrs

I don't know which is sadder, that a minister is forced to resign because of his inappropriate behaviour toward woman or that Farrar attacks the people making the complaint.

This is gutter politics whatever what you look at this, as Target would say 'shame on you' David Farrar.

It is clear this has ruined Worth's career, the only way he can retain a simulacrum of his integrity, would be to resign from Parliament. The greater question to be asked, is what should Goff do? The fact that this is typical Labour form, suggests he should do nothing. Good form suggests he should step down as leader. However as many have suggested, his remaining as leader would be the best outcome for the Nats. An ineffectual bumbling fool in charge of the opposition benches would be a huge advantage to them.

So easy to forget is it not. That what was Mr Worthy doing meeting married women. What Farrar the National Party actrivitist is doing here is simply representing bullet notes with incidental commentary and pure opinion. It is obvious that Mr Worthy's PR company is getting some good fees out of this as he is obviously a desperate man fighting a desperate battle for survival. The story here is not Goff or Choudary but about the actions or not of a minister of the crown.

To describe Choudray as evil is probably an overstatement.
But I don't see anyone doing that.
What is patently obvious from this sad little exercise is that she attempted to play both National and Labour, and lost.

All this stuff is just white noise designed to distract. As noted, Worth is at the centre of a police investigation. That's the issue that should concern us, not speculating on whether Choudry was a shrinking violet or (in Cameron Slater's typically sexist description) "Mata Hari", or whether Goff acted too slowly.

I would expect Cunliffe and Street to quietly love the whole scenario.

Labour needs to look at its self before throwing stones. Last year they granted a wealthy Chinese businessman residency knowing that he was wanted by Interpol and a warrant was out for his arrest in China for embezzling $200 million. Is it right for Labour to ignore the rules and take donations etc from this man in return for residency and then make a big song and dance when some texts are sent by a National MP? Where is the Justice as the Labour Ministers who gave this residency are now people in Senior positions in Opposition i.e. Mr. Cunliffe. Let’s get back to ethical standards and not sell NZ out. Maybe the NBR could update us on what is happening with this case and is the Chinese Business man – Bill Liu still here in New Zealand or has he been sent back to face up to his crimes?

Ethics is right, what is happening with this case as us hard working New Zealanders should be told as its approx. 1 year since this corruption case broke. If Bill Liu or whatever his real name is allowed to keep his NZ Residency then I think it’s a far bigger issue than this Richard Worth matter. Labour Heads should roll on this.

Phil Goff's role in all of this needs to come under the same kind of scrutiny that he called for of Key and Worth. It beggars belief that Mrs Choudary had immediate access to Phil Goff when first approached by Worth. Goff has milked this situation for as much as he can, but it is now unravelling. He cannot substantiate any of the accusations of lewd txts by Worth, and even the "see-through sari" story has been debunked. I hesitate to call for Goff's head however; another six months of his inept leadership should ensure that National is the natural party of government until well into the 2020's.

And to Anon @ 12.47pm - nice try, but Mrs Choudary is not the victim in the matter the police are investigating

Perhaps those who now want the focus to be on Worth and the police investigation should have thought about that before encouraging Goff and Choudary in the smear attempt. The gate is open, her identity is revealed, the motivations need to be scrutinised and we want to know the depths of their machiavellian orchestrations. You don't get a mulligan, you can't replay the shot.
It is the standard tactic to shout VICTIM loud and often to stifle scrutiny and before the facts are known. It would be a travesty of justice not to investigate the veracity of the allegations however.
There is no excuse to rush to judgement based on ideology, it causes deficiency in objective reasoning.

Goff, Choudary and Worth are as sleezy as each other. Glad to hear that a dodgy minister is gone, an opposition leader has egg on his face and a discredible women has been ridiculed

Every political party attracts "entrepreneurial" sorts whose motives are such obviously ones of personal gain and name dropping to enhance the reputation of often dodgy commerical activity, rather than believing in any actual policies of the party itself.

The Choudary's appear a classic example of that and now deserve all the muck thrown back on them. Mrs Choudary is not a victim of anything here. Worth is guilty only of being a polite but incredible dense, middle-aged man. Goff on the other hand appears to have orchestrated the whole disaster.

I bet he's now regretting ever speaking to the Tawdry Choudary's.

The OAG report into immigration matters was released about the same time as Worth announced his resignation.

Key in his unstateman like manner, told the media that he would have sacked him. Key's statement only fuelled the speculation.

Did it suit Goff and his labour cronies to sensationalise the totally ridiculous claims to keep the msm from iinvestigating the report?

Sorry missed this report, what was its findings for the Labour Ministers involved and Liu?

Its pretty clear from the timeline above that Phil Goff was actually involved in this all the way through, and it reeks of entrapment of Richard Worth. This all reflects very poorly on Mr Goff, who should now just back off. (Rhyming too!)

This woman is clearly a gold digger and trouble maker.she is evil as they come.
Why not deport them?
Does NZ need opportunistic Indians LIKE THEM?

Amen to that

Thats the ANSEWER Murray
Send the XXXX"Goff "with them
Bill

The term used by the Prime Minister was allegator- someone who alleges something to be true, a term frequently used of those who make a claim without proof.
As for Ms Neelam Choudary, I think that she did what she was told to do after she consulted with Mr Goff very early on in the process. Both of them may have thought that something more serious would eventuate, and then Mr Goff in his eagerness to appear as potential leadership material overplayed his hand.

It is curious how most comments above are carrying out the same sort of allegations against Choudry/Goff that they accuse them of doing. Perhaps you could reflect that the resignation/sacking by Key came before the hooha that started after Key "outed" the Choudry complaint. And Key/Goff were not the only ones who knew about Goff's call. It is easy to speculate that a clever Dick in Keys Office chose to leak it so that Key could confirm it in order to score against Goff. You see? Easy to speculate.

Well Goff did declare the National inherited an economy in the best shape possible.

No doubt, strikingly beautiful!

Nothing like the sound of embittered Nact supporters bleating about one of their own getting a raw deal. It's music to my ears :-)

Come on David-Don't let this "purchase of residency" just fade away. How much did Labour receive in the back pocket?? And how come David Cunliffe seems to be getting away with such evil behaviour?? This is far more serious than a silly middle-aged man thinking with the wrong body part and falling for Eve and the apple. As for Phillis Goff-the pup from Cullen?-you are National's best assett.
You prat!!

is being investigated by the Police.
He has not been charged with any crime to my knowledge.

I think the rule is , that the accused is given a fair trial BEFORE you hang him.

This business is rather like poor Dover Samuels , who was sacked by Helen , because she said she didn't know what he would be ACCUSED of next.
No fair trial for him either.

Helen must be cringing in her grave...she schooled Goff for all he was 'worth' and he still failed to come up to scratch. Labour is all the more shamed and ridiculed for this obvious setup. No wonder Helen left NZ, she had no faith in any of her successors and couldn't bear to hang around and be embarrassed by their antics..

No doubt Hell-in knows Phillis is a pratt but she would not be rolling in her grave because for a long time she has had a "me first" agenda and that is why she took so many trips to the U.N. over the years-she wes setting up a position for herself in the heaven for ultimate control freaks.Anyone with half a brain knows she has been circling in a holding pattern-just waiting for this,or a simllar position,to become available. As a matter of interest-where is her dearly loved husband and her excellent marriage. Each being what they are is fine-but the lies and deceit?? No way. She is a deceitful, disingenuous person and she will not be worrying about Phillis' lack of ability. She has got what she wanted-only two hops to go-to THE TOP SPOT.YES HELEN????
