A very awkward ad for Google TV down under ... but I want one anyway
The above clip - an advertisement for a Google TV set-top box used with a Sony Bravia television - has been lampooned on a number of Aussie media blogs.
And indeed the guy looks weirdly bemused and disengaged, "like he can't wait to get back to his iPad" as one blogger put it (another possibility: he's made a misguided attempt to act like a hipster).
But forgetting that, the $A349, Android 3-powered Sony Google TV looks pretty slick. Good on Sony for partnering with Google, and releasing it down under (see The Australian's write-up here).
I haven't heard back from Sony NZ today about local release yet, but last time I checked in it was a "no" - and with Google still not bothering to make its Play service's music, movie or TV content available for New Zealand, it wouldn't make much of an Apple TV competitor.
A selection of optimised apps and widgets are nice, but roll on the day when all TVs simply offer a broadband internet connection via wi-fi or ethernet, then give you free rein to add your internet services, sites and browser of your choice (Google TV does let you roam freely around the web with its Chrome browser).

or mangled by TV Auckland Ooops meant TVNZ
I like how they are watching HBOGo and Netflix, neither of which are available in Australia or New Zealand at this point.
sony also have a 'movies unlimited' service, which is also not available in NZ (not sure about in Oz, probably not)
