XT fastest in Auckland - Truenet

Independent tester Truenet has found Telecom's 3G mobile network fastest in most areas of central Auckland, and the best peforming at a number of tasks.

XT achieved the highest average speed and the was the best performer at a majority of locations tested (see graphic below). The results mirror NBR's anecdotal experience.

Second place was 2degrees. Although it doesn't support HSPA+ (the fastest 3G technology, now on Telecom and Vodafone's networks), it perhaps benefits from a relatively modest number of data users.

Using a single router board with equipped with a HSPA+-capable modem and SIM card for each network, a TrueNet vehicle tested each network simultaneously in a number of central city locations. Methodology developed by OfCom (in broad terms, the UK equivalent of the NZ Commerce Commission's Telecommunications Commissioner) was employed for the the tests.

The measurements were carried out in late June.

Truenet is a fully-owned subsidiary of Wellington-based IT services and web development company Catalyst.

The company recently measured mobile broadband in the capital, with similar results.

Well know me over with a feather.

Anybody who actually uses mobile data on more than one network knows that this continues the situation of at least six years since the upgrade to EVDO in 2004. One provider is signficantly more useable across much of New Zealand.

Cheers

I use both and the difference between the two is night and day - XT is zippy and Voda is a slug...

What about 2degrees?

The results for upload speed are very strange. Do TruNet's devices actually support HSUPA?? The upload speeds shown in their results, indicate that they don't & the results are hard to gauge what the true performance of each network really is.

Testing on the Vodafone Network has shown excellent speeds at a number of different locations around Auckland, according to these results:

Is TrueNet and Catalyst truly independent? I recall them doing a bit of work for Telecom when I use to work there.

TrueNet is an independent company whose studies on Mobile Broadband are being funded by TrueNet investors.
