Invercargill will experience the most dramatic drop; down to 28 from its current 82 full-time workers.
A proposal to disestablish 191 full-time equivalent (FTE) positions was last month put to staff in Rotorua, New Plymouth, Napier, Nelson and Invercargill.
IRD Service Delivery deputy commissioner Carolyn Tremain today announced this number had reduced to 156 following consultation with staff.
Ms Tremain said the IRD wanted to make doing business easier and more efficient for customers.
“We are maintaining offices and counters in all our current locations, but where and how we do some work is changing.”
In future, IRD work not requiring face-to-face contact will be grouped in larger centres. An IRD statement said this would allow regional sites to increase their focus on community education and advisory services.
Implementation of changes will begin early next year, and take about 18 months.
A range of options for staff, including applying for new roles, relocation, and redundancy, are being explored.

Invercargill – from 82 to 28
New Plymouth – from 64 to 28
Napier – from 87 to 77
Nelson – from 51 to 32
