Banks' departure will clear the air

There was not a lot to gain and much to lose if John Banks had opted to stay in Parliament another six weeks.

The Epsom MP and former Act Party leader announced last night he would resign from Parliament this week following the verdict against him on Thursday for filing a false electoral return in his 2010 campaign for the Auckland mayoralty.

Technically, he could have remained as a member of Parliament until the House rises for the election on July 31.
