Cunliffe’s $9360 baby bribe will increase child poverty

David Cunliffe’s baby bribe is wrong, pretty much any which way you look at it.

Under the new policy, whenever a baby is born to a family earning between $100,000 and $150,000 a year, the parents will receive $3120 from the state, paid over 52 weeks.

If a baby is born to a family earning $50,000 or under, the family will receive $9360 spread over 156 weeks.

It will be somewhere in between for families in the $50,000 to $100,000 a year range.

The weekly payment will be cut to zero on the child’s third birthday.
