Maori claim victory in Mighty River sale – what does this mean?

Despite losing their Supreme Court challenge to the partial sale of Mighty River Power, some Maori are claiming a victory.

They are taking heart from the court’s decision that the Crown is bound to comply with the principles of the Treaty before selling shares.

The Waikato sub-tribe Pouakani, which, along with the Maori Council was one of the appellants, is reported as saying this ruling amounts to a ratification of the Treaty and its principles.
