Forbes joining Radio New Zealand
High-profile Maori broadcaster Mihingarangi Forbes will join Radio New Zealand following her shock resignation from Maori Television yesterday.
She will be the public broadcaster's specialist correspondent for Maori affairs, where she will contribute to programmes such as Morning Report and Checkpoint.
Despite there being only a day between Ms Forbes leaving Maori TV and joining RNZ, RNZ head of content Carol Hirschfeld says she was "surprised" to hear Ms Forbes had resigned from Maori TV.
"I've been recruiting for a range of people for quite some time now ... She's a close friend of mine, so I have been talking to her a lot but it was just interesting timing for us," Ms Hirschfeld tells NBR ONLINE.
Ms Hirschfeld and Ms Forbes have worked at Maori TV and TV3 together. Ms Hirschfeld left Maori TV in September shortly after the controversial appointment of chief executive Paora Maxwell. Another high profile departure was Julian Wilcox.
Ms Forbes is the former host of the current affairs programme Native Affairs on Maori Television. She has more than 20 years' experience in the television industry, working as a journalist and producer for TV3 and TVNZ.
For six years she worked as a reporter at Campbell Live.
In a press release, Ms Hirschfeld said, “Mihingarangi is a skilled investigative reporter with a highly regarded track record. She will significantly strengthen Radio New Zealand’s reportage on Maori issues and signal the organisation’s commitment in this area."
