Government climbs aboard beach funding campaign
Conservation Minister Maggie Barry has confirmed her officials are talking to the crowdfunders seeking to buy a beach at Awaroa in Abel Tasman National Park at the top of the South Island.
Impressed by the strong show of public support, ministers in the National-led coalition government are keen to get on board too.
The beach would become part of the conservation estate, which looks after the national park.
It is unclear what the seller thinks of the crowdfunding or government’s proposal.
Attempts to contact Wellington businessman Michael Spackman have proved unsuccessful.
