State sector office space chopped – and it's not over yet

The Crown has reduced its office space footprint by more than 51,000sq m.

The trend – and its detrimental effect on property investment – has been noted in several real estate agency reports over the past year.

The latest Crown Office Estate report, for 2011-12, was also the opportunity for the government to launch a refocused property policy direction for the state services.

The principles are not new – smaller office space, fewer offices and reduced cost to the taxpayer.

But the previous reports have focused more on Wellington.
