Govt fiscal policies hit job data – but councils spend up large

The first batch of this week's labour market data shows a steady but unstellar level of improvement.

The impact of the government's restrain on spending can be seen in the comparatively low increases in public sector wages compared to the private sector – but local councils are still spending up large.

Private sector average ordinary hourly earnings are up 2.3% for the year, but they are up only 1.4% in the public sector, according to the quarterly employment survey.
