Hawaiki Cable names US landing partner

Hawaiki senior vice president North America Gina Bohreer

Hawaiki Cable has announced Nasdaq-listed telco Alaska Communications as its landing partner in Oregon.

Hawaiki is rolling out a $US300 million 14,000km trans-Pacific cable between Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii and Oregon. Its backers include NBR Rich Listers Malcolm Dick and Sir Eoin Edgar.

Oregon is the best state on the US West Coast to land a submarine cable because it’s relatively safe, non-bureaucratic and has easy access to US networks and data centres, according to Hawaiki senior vice-president North America Gina Bohreer.

Hawaiki has submitted an application for its cable to the Federal Communication Commission, Ms Bohreer says.

Alaska Communications manages submarine cables between Alaska and the Pacific Northwest.

Alaska Communications business markets senior VP Bill Bishop says, “We have leveraged our expertise in submarine cable operations to provide landing station and network management capabilities to several other Trans Pacific submarine systems.

“Now, we are pleased to extend our network managed service capabilities to Hawaiki and its Oregon landing station.”
