International planning expert blasts Len Brown

Auckland mayor Len Brown is under fire from an international urban planning researcher who says he’s picked the wrong cities to try and emulate.

Wendell Cox, an American who owns the research firm Demographia and has been a prominent critic of “smart growth”, has criticised the mayor for comments made in defence of the Auckland Plan's "compact city" agenda.

These include Mr Brown accusing Housing Minister Nick Smith of advocating a “flawed” Los Angeles model of “urban sprawl” going back to the 1940s and 1950s.
