It's time to break up Fonterra, academic says

Fonterra’s botulism scare should prompt serious consideration of breaking up the dairy giant, Waikato university agribusiness specialist Professor Jacqueline Rowarth says.

While the company reports the problem has been contained and market watchers expect the cost to investors in Fonterra’s shareholders’ fund to be minimal, Prof Rowarth says the complexity of Fonterra – with its 17,000 staff and annual revenue approaching $20 billion – presents a real problem.
