Labour leadership: Why the Jones Insurgency has impact

Labour list MP Shane Jones’ surprisingly good performance in the party’s current leadership handicaps potentially tilts the political gyroscope in a new direction.

It has challenged the party’s cherished assumptions about itself and about the current state of New Zealand politics.

The trouble is, of course, that it is Mr Jones making this challenge: one minute he makes a lot of sense and the next minute he is behaving like a kind of Labour-ish, tangata whenua version of UK comedian Rik Mayall’s Alan B’Stard - right down to the knob jokes.
