Labour promises to help farmers

Labour is pledging to reform the underperforming meat industry, only its suggested solutions are notably light on detail.

The meat industry is this country’s largest manufacturing industry and second largest merchandise exporter, with $6.3 billion in exports in 2013. 

While it has increased annual export value growth by an average of 8% since 2002, an exodus of sheep and beef farmers continues from the sector, owing to declining profitability and the rise of dairy.
