Building ministry says new post-quake codes ‘realistic’

The Department of Building and Housing is defending new and more liberal repair codes introduced at the end of 2011.

The new rules mean that insurance companies have reassessed broken Christchurch homes and have re-classed them for repairs rather complete rebuild. In some cases the difference between the first writeoff assessment and the second repair reassessment is nearly $200,000.

But the repair assessment is a fiction because the land has been red zoned by the government.
