Oil, gas exploration needs closer scrutiny

A proposed Exclusive Economic Zone and Continental Shelf (Environmental Effects) bill does not adequately deal with the possibility of lower level gas and oil leaks, the local government and environment select committee has heard.

In select committee stages, the bill creates a regulatory framework which will cover exploration and access to the ocean in the country’s exclusive economic zone, including seabed mining, petroleum activities and marine farming.
