Polluter pays principle clashes with cheap food ambitions

Warnings by the Commissioner for the Environment about accelerating nitrate levels in rivers are assured – thanks to statutory authorities.

Commissioner Jan Wright released her report last week and pointed the blame for raised nitrate and phosphorus levels on dairying effluent.

In Canterbury, Environment Canterbury is already in the throes of allowing 25% higher nitrate levels in the Hurunui River as a result of intensified farming.
