Race-based constitution 'threatens democracy'

A leading academic believes the ”very foundation of democracy” is under threat in New Zealand as a result of a review of the country’s constitution currently under way.

Associate Professor Elizabeth Rata of Auckland University, who has undertaken research on ethnic politics, says the review could result in the Treaty of Waitangi being enshrined as the country’s supreme law.

“The threat of a race-based constitution in New Zealand is now very real,” she warns.
