Radical Maori lawyer struck off for forgery – extra details

The turbulent career of a high-flying Maori radical who once referred to European New Zealanders as the “riffraff, flotsam and jetsam of Britain” has ended in disgrace.

Former Maori Party candidate Atareta Poananga has been struck off as a lawyer after falsifying 20 signatures while processing Treaty of Waitangi claims.

The Gisborne lawyer admitted four charges before the Lawyers and Conveyancers Disciplinary Tribunal of forgery and false declaration, and two of misconduct.
