A year before the 2002 election, then National Party president Michelle Boag and her friend Murray McCully decided to roll Jenny Shipley.

Mrs Shipley was only polling in the mid 30s and Ms Boag and Mr McCully decided she didn’t have what was needed to beat Helen Clark and regain the Beehive. Instead, with the likes of Roger Sowry and Nick Smith, they installed Bill English, hoping to revive National’s fortunes.
