'South Western spur' to fuel Christchurch retail growth
A new report says Christchurch will need 80,000sq m of retail floor space over the next 10 years.
The bulk of it, 42,500sq m, is required for what report author Jones Lang LaSalle terms the "South Western Spur" – the trend towards areas around Prebbleton, Wigram and Halswell, where significant subdivision is under way.
The report says there will be sufficient retail spending growth to support eight to 10 large-format supermarkets in the Christchurch urban area alone. At least of these will be needed to service the "South Western Spur".
