The Art of BMW

Team McMillan BMW Art Awards and Painted Bonnets

On Wednesday night Bob McMillan of Team McMillan BMW presented cheques for $10,000 each to one of New Zealand’s leading artists and to one of the country’s newly emerging artists.

Gary Currin was awarded the first prize in the When Brush Meets Bonnet project by judge Chris Saines, the director of the Auckland Art Gallery.

Currin’s painted bonnet called Meditations on Orpheus II was one of 11 commissioned paintings on cutdown BMW bonnets.

Chris Saines said of Currin's winning work “The artist imagines a romantic storm tossed sea, a tense and dangerous play of elemental forces across the bonnet ... It’s as if the aerodynamic shifts in form and plane of the bonnet have imposed themselves upon the natural forces.

“In a bit of trompe l’oeil that befits arts earlier history, Currin paints into the bonnet’s own landscape rather than over it. This in turn alludes to Orpheus, the Greek hero of the classical age who had among his numerous gifts, the power to divert water courses.

“ Currin has diverted the course of this storm across the steel, skin and bone of this particular BMW bonnet.

“He has even played with the blue, black and white palette of the BMW brand marquee, keying it into his painterly response to the challenge.”

Alexander Bartleet’s work .00027735 of an Acre was the sole prize winner in the Team McMillan Emerging Artists Awards judged by arts writer Warwick Brown.

Bob McMillan said that the awards which are now in their third year were intended to provide support for both established artists through the bonnet project as well as younger artists through the Emerging Artists Award.
“We recognise that innovation and experimentation are incredibly important to the country’s economic and social development. Support for the creative industries is something which is critical for both government and the private sector.

“It is also important to acknowledge and reward individuals who achieve excellence in their field.”

The completed bonnets will be donated to Mercy Hospice for their annual charity auction.
