Tourism operators say mining won't stall growth

Government plans to remove parts of the Coromandel and Great Barrier Island out of the protection of schedule four in the Crown Minierals Act and spend $4 million on investigating potentially rare-earth mineral rich areas including Rakiura National Park on Stewart Island will not necessarily stall tourism development there, operators say.But in an industry where perception is key, anything that threatens the “unspoilt” observation of New Zealand could be very damaging, they say.
