Treasury says National's housing subsidy counter-productive

National’s flagship housing policy has been damned as counter productive by the Treasury.

The Home Start housing subsidy policy, announced by leader John Key at National’s campaign launch in Manukau, was proclaimed as being something that would “encourage the building of new, affordable homes and help New Zealand families get a deposit together for a house.

“Helping more people buy their own home will provide stability for families, strength for communities, and security in retirement," the policy says. 

Those claims do not stack up, the Treasury says.
