Union U-turn gives hope for Ports of Auckland deal

There is hope Ports of Auckland's long-running dispute with the Maritime Union is close to being settled.

The parties have been locked in a sometimes acrimonious dispute – including a series of strikes and lockouts – over a new collective bargaining agreement since August 2011.

However, this month the union dropped its opposition to the lifting of a court-imposed ban on the port being able to hire and train new workers, amid undertakings and concessions on both sides.
