Watchdog sides with Mighty River Power over drug test dispute

A Mighty River Power employee, stood down for declining a random drug and alcohol test, has lost the opening round of a misconduct battle before the employment watchdog.

Dean Cowell was stood from his job as a geothermal production technician at the Mighty River Power geothermal power station at Kawerau.

MRP had introduced random drug and alcohol testing a year earlier and said Mr Cowell’s refusal to take the test breached company policy and could be considered serious misconduct.
