Account holders have been warned about a series of scam emails which appear to come from the New Zealand Bankers' Association.

The emails, with the subject line "We are necessitating a verification process on all account(s)," try to extract personal banking information from the recipients.

Association chief executive Kirk Hope says the scam was easy to spot because the "association is not a bank, and would never ask people about their bank accounts".

"People are reminded to safeguard information relating to their bank accounts, and never to disclose their PIN numbers or account passwords to anyone.

"The New Zealand Bankers' Association, and its member banks, will never ask a customer to disclose their PIN number of account password," he says.

New Zealand banks are often the targets of this type of scam, otherwise known as "phishing", which involves scammers trying to get bank account numbers and passwords.
