EPMU announces strike action at NZ Post subsidiary

Thu 20 Aug 7

Workers at New Zealand Post’s largest subsidiary ECL (Express Couriers Limited) will employ go-slow tactics as part of industrial action against their state-owned employer.

The Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union (EPMU) has announced strike action after negotiations for a new collective agreement covering processing, admin and finance employees at ECL broke down.

ECL operates the Courier Post, Pace and Contract Logistics businesses; more than 800 of its employees are EPMU members.

Courier mail set to speed up

CourierPost is building a new $50 million depot in Highbrook, Auckland, that will be larger than Eden Park.

The facility will open in April next year and will include a $16 million automatic parcel sorting system that can process 18,000 items per hour using technology new to the country.

That’s six times faster than the 3000 items per hour rate processed at the largest existing Mt Wellington depot. The Mt Wellington facility and two other Auckland depots will amalgamate into the new Highbrook plant when it opens.
