Bob Parker has been re-elected mayor of Christchurch, according to progress results for the 2010 local election.
The result is based on 98% of returned voting papers and does not include some special votes and voting papers returned today before voting closed.
According to the progress result, 68,245 votes were received for Mr Parker, while his closest rival, Wigram MP Jim Anderton, received 51,566 votes, a difference of 16,679.
In Welllington, mayor Kerry Prendergast retained her leadership of the capital by 40 votes over nearest rival Celia Wade-Brown, a Green candidate.
Hamilton mayor Bob Simcock looks to have lost his fight for re-election.
With 95% of votes counted today, newcomer Julie Hardaker was leading Mr Simcock by 12,520 votes to 11,723.
