Supply competition for domestic mussel consumers is the primary concern of the Commerce Commission in its investigation of the planned take over of Pacifica Seafoods Group by listed fishing company Sanford.

Sanford said it wants to take over the Skeggs family’s company in order to expand its mussel farming and processing capacity.

Today the Commerce Commission published a statement of preliminary issues directing where its focus lies in respect to the acquisition.

While both companies export most of its harvested mussels, the commission said the New Zealand supply was its focus.

The commission will also investigate the king salmon operations of both companies.

In assessing the relevant market for mussels, the commission will consider whether there is a difference between the supply of fresh mussels compared to frozen and investigate demand from the main grocery chains, restaurants and food service channels and if they are discrete customer markets.

Submissions on the acquisition proposal are invited by the commission but need to be submitted by October 22.

It expected to make a final decision by November 26.
