Breakfast boy Corin Dann has become TVNZ’s new political editor.

He starts his new role on May 21, just in time for the Budget.

TVNZ say the Breakfast TV presenter earned the role for his “strong background in politics and economics and his experience in all facets of live television”.

“His appointment will secure TVNZ’s strong performance in the political arena,” TVNZ head of news and current affairs, Ross Dagan says.

“This is an important job in any democratic society and Corin’s track record and professional skills will be an outstanding asset both to the company and to viewers.”

Mr Dann has spent 15 months in the Breakfast hot seat, with co-presenter Petra Bagust.

Before that, the younger brother of Herald business editor Liam Dann has been the host of TV One’s business programme.

Before joining TVNZ he had a long career in radio, including spells covering sport, economics and five years as a political reporter covering two general elections in the Parliamanetary Press Gallery.

“Politics is my passion and I’m looking forward enormously to getting back to daily journalism in the Gallery. I feel I’ve still got unfinished business,” Mr Dann said.

He replaces Guyon Espiner, who recently joined TV3.

His shift adds to regular changes on Breakfast since the controversial Paul Henry moved to Australia.

TVNZ will make a further announcement regarding a replacement presenter for the Breakfast programme in the coming weeks.
