District Court judges appointed

Attorney-General Christopher Finlayson today announced the appointments of David Ruth and Barney Thomas as District Court judges.

Judge Ruth, of Christchurch, was admitted to the bar in 1974 and was a partner in Brockett James for 10 years before becoming an associate.

He was a partner in Layburn Hodgins in 1998 and began practicing as a barrister in 2000, specialising in the criminal jurisdiction.

He was a former president of the Criminal Bar Association and a former member of the New Zealand Law Society Criminal Law Committee.

Judge Thomas, currently residing in the Netherlands, was admitted to the bar in 1991. He has been on a trial attorney at the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia since 2007, prosecuting war crimes and crimes against humanity.

He was crown counsel at the Crown Law Office in Wellington from 2005 to 2007, working on criminal appeals before the Court of Appeal.

Judge Ruth will be sworn in at Christchurch on June 2 and Judge Thomas will be sworn in at Hamilton on July 29.

Both judges will sit in Hamilton.
