Some of New Zealand's top scientists and business leaders have been appointed to two boards by Research, Science and Technology Minister Wayne Mapp.
The science and innovation boards would fund "high-quality research" to increase productivity and raise New Zealand's standard of living, Dr Mapp said.
"These boards will be key players in the Government's reforms to improve the science and innovation system," Mr Mapp said.
"We have appointed some of New Zealand's top scientists, business people and innovation experts to the boards."
Dr William Rolleston, who had extensive experience in the biotechnology sector, would chair the Innovation Board.
Sir David Skegg, a "distinguished" scientist and Vice-Chancellor of Otago University, would chair the Science Board.
The new Ministry of Science and Innovation, which becomes fully operational on February 1, would support and monitor the boards.
